How hard is it to finish 60 units at a community college within one year?

I want to transfer to UC Berkeley next year, if possible. In order to transfer, you need a minimum of 60 transferable units. Do you think I can handle 60 units doing all summer, fall, winter, and spring terms? Also, about what GPA would I need to transfer to UC Berkeley. I want to be a political science major.

First of all Political Science is an impacted major at Cal, so I would advise to at least, and i mean at least, a 3.5 GPA. GPA is very important to get in, but Cal also looks at many other factors. Don’t rush it, doing in two years is stressful enough. Cal looks at many other factors as well, such as extra-curricular activities and community service. Your UC application essay is also a key into getting into Cal. If you do 16 units a semester, 12 in the summer, and 6 in the winter you will have enough to transfer in two years and it will also give you enough time to do some extra-curricular activities, have a part-time job, and some community service. Remember even people who have a 4.0, but no extra-curriculars get denied at Cal. Just work hard to get a good GPA, and be active in clubs and in your community and you will be a Golden Bear! Best of luck.

  1. Well, 60 units is the equivalent of two years done normally (i.e. fall and spring, then fall and spring again). It’s probably possible to do it in one year, but I wouldn’t advise it unless you have to.

Is there a rush to transfer? It might be best to take it slower (30 units a year for 2 years) instead, so that you can get the best grades possible and actually learn more. If some sort of requirement mandates that you finish in one year, I guess you have to try and do it. But if it isn’t necessary to rush it, I wouldn’t.

Another thing is, what else are you doing? If you’re working full-time or something like that, 60 units in a year might be almost impossible.

I don’t know what GPA you would need. I’m sure that info can be obtained by talking with or emailing a UCB counselor, or by going to the UCB website.

    May God bless you.

If your college is set up in a way where they have quarterly sessions in a year, you could easily take 5 classes each quater and be able to transfer. So you can spread out the classes and make it much easier on yourself. The only question is: Can you go a straight year with nothing but school? I personally wouldn’t be able to, it would drive me crazy.
