How do I save everything on PC to external hard drive and then restore to Factory settings?
Hi I would like to move everything on my PC to an external hard drive and then restore the pc to factory settings. Then I would like to use everything on PC and laptop. Is this possible
I am not very technical so please take this into account
Thanks
you can save only files not programs to the external drive (like Pictures, music, documents) programs you will need to reload on to the Laptop or PC to be able to use the content.
Basically you select the files you want and copy to the external drive. You can plug in the drive to the PC via the USB port, open the drive so you can see what is in it (look in My Computer icon) and do the same for your PC. Line the two open windows up side by side, drag and drop the files you want to save from C: and the folders they are in to the external drive.
If looking to save your emails that are stored on the PC (rather than an online mail server like yahoo mail) you will find these are in a hidden folder. Open Control Panel and adjust the Folder Options (View Tab, tick the Show hidden Files and Folders option, Apply and close).
Unplug the external drive before restoring to factory settings to be sure the machine does not format your drive by mistake (I have seen it done!).
And yes the content will be visible on any PC or Laptop you choose to connect the external drive to.
I dont understand this remark: I would like to use everything on PC and laptop. It sounds like you want to take the PC and transplant it to a laptop so you can use both. You can take the data and use it on both very easily. Dont try to copy programs, they will have to be re-installed because you cannot copy them easily like that.
You can move your data to an external drive easily and it is good to do this while you restore a PC, because it might be lost in the process otherwise. Copy and paste; your data will appear in the folders "Documents and Settings" or "Users", so be sure to copy at least those.

Hi,
No need to worry. We are here to help you.
Try this
If you are using Windows XP
Got to the location
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Prifle name
and Copy the Folders Desktop, Favorites, My Documents and past it in a folder inside the External hard drive.
If you are using Windows Vista, or 7
Got to the location
C:\Users\Your User Prifle name
and Copy the Folders Desktop, Favorites, My Documents and past it in a folder inside the External hard drive.
Now go to the C drive and if there is any required folders in the C drive then copy them also.
Done. We completed the back up.
Enjoy

you can do that by using disc imaging/cloning software, after you’ve done that you can then put it back to your pc or laptop, i got curious all of a sudden btw, ud like to setup ur pc to factory settings then just put the backup again?
if so, just copy ur important files to the external hdd, have ur pc a clean install of the os then just put the files back
well that’s all i can think of right now, be careful not to lose your files

You sure can’t describe what you want clearly. What do you want to do with that "everything on PC and laptop"?

I do this with DRIVEIMAGEXML from Runtime software. This images the hard drive to an external drive and allows you to recover individual files or folders. If you also make a BARTPE boot disk with PEBUILDER you can also restore the whole image after a system crash
